“Other Firearm” Requirements:

In order for a firearm to qualify as a non-NFA Other, and to be legal in the State of New Jersey, a firearm must be able to meet the following requirements:

• The firearm must be outfitted with an approved pistol brace.

• The firearm must have a vertical foregrip attached to the handguard

• The overall length of the firearm must be a minimum of 26”

  The overal length is measured from the end of the barrel without a muzzle device - to the end of the mechanism supporting the pistol brace, but not the brace itself, if the brace is removeable. In most cases this is the end of the buffer tube on an AR-pattern firearm, but any easy way to unsderstand this is the shortest possible length of the part that supports the brace which is permanently attached to the receiver. An example below shows a PTR 9 with the folding brace permanently pinned in place to add to the overall length. If folded it would create and AOW.

  A pistol brace as opposed to a stock makes the firearm a pistol - as it is designed to be fired with one hand. Adding a vertical foregrip to a firearm under 26” creates an AOW which is regulated under the National Firearms Act. In New Jersey, a firearm with both a pistol brace and vertical grip, and an overall length of 26” is consider a non-NFA other, as it is designed to be fired with 2 hands, but not shouldered.
